Financial Performances Scenario 1

Accepting financial "gifts"

Here is the scenario

A member's spouse passes away, and he loved the club! He especially loved hanging out with his friends and smoking cigars on the patio with all his golf buddies. His spouse would like to donate a large sum of money to have the patio expanded in his memory. She would like a plaque on the outside post of the patio with her husband's image and some kind words to remember him. Her $100,000 donation is just about half of what it will cost to expand the patio.

Questions

Answer the following questions in a way that illustrates an understanding of servant leadership and culture of care.

  • Does this type of donation set a precedent for expectations of the same from other members? Why or why not?
  • Do large donations such as this allow these members to have more influence on other matters at the club? Explain why it may be perceived that way.
